Same Day Dentures
At Calapooia Family Dental we specialize in several tooth replacement options, such as same day dentures, because we want our patients to maintain functional, beautiful smiles. Unfortunately, about 40 million Americans are missing all or most of their teeth. If you fall into this category, a same day denture may be the ideal solution!
Same Day Dentures Vs. Conventional Dentures
The same day denture, also known as an immediate denture, is a removable prosthesis designed to replace all of the teeth in a single arch. Most people in need of a denture still have a few, albeit, problematic teeth remaining in either jaw. Any remaining teeth must be removed before the fabrication and placement of a complete denture.
During a brief healing period following your extractions, your gums will shrink or change shape. For this reason, a conventional denture can only be fabricated about eight to 12 weeks later, using an updated impression of your gums. A current impression ensures your new denture is properly fit, resulting a more comfortable and effective appliance.
As the name suggests, a same day denture is placed immediately after your extraction procedure. We may recommend an immediate denture for functional and esthetic reasons. Same day dentures can:
• |
Ensure you do not go without teeth for eight to 12 weeks
|
• |
Help you avoid a highly restrictive diet following your extractions
|
• |
Protect your gums from potential harm following your extractions |
It is important to note that same day dentures are often a temporary solution. Once your gums have completely healed, we may recommend an alternative like a conventional or implant-retained denture. Talk with Dr. Summers or Dr. Hagerty to learn more about your potential options.
The Same Day Denture Process
The same day denture process begins with a consultation appointment. Be sure to ask questions and voice concerns so we can determine if same day dentures are right for you. We want you to be excited and satisfied with your new teeth!
Once we determine that you are a suitable candidate, we will take an impression of your existing teeth and gums. Your impression will be used to prefabricate your immediate denture before your extractions. This allows us to place the denture during the same appointment!
Before you leave our office, we will give you a detailed set of post-operative instructions. Follow these instructions closely to reduce the risk of complications and ensure a successful healing process.
Life With Your New Denture
Following the placement of your immediate denture, it may take a few weeks to adjust to your new teeth. Chewing, smiling, and speaking with your appliance may take some practice. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to give us a call!
As your underlying bone and gums begin to heal, your denture may need minor adjustments. We will ask you to schedule several follow-up appointments to ensure your denture remains well-fit. A permanent reline will be necessary once the healing process is complete.
